Surgical Weight Loss Options
Patients with a substantial amount of overweight often improve from weight loss surgery. For those who are morbidly obese there are a number of various types of surgical weight loss options to choose among. The biggest advantage of having weight loss surgery is that most patients are able to get rid of their extra weight over a couple of years and can keep most of the weight off. Weight loss surgery can also help resolve a large number of health problems linked to obesity. All patients must qualify for the weight loss surgery. A surgeon that specializes in these types of surgeries will thoroughly consider each patient's circumstances before making a decision. Usually, those who are possible candidates for these types of surgeries must be considered morbidly obese. This means that they must be at least 100 pounds or more over their normal body weight or twice their recommended body mass index. Patients who qualify for this surgery must be relatively healthy otherwise and not suffer from problems with the stomach, pancreas and intestines. The most important factor is that the patients must understand their life long change in eating habits and in lifestyle. There are three types of weight loss surgery that are commonly performed on overweight people. These surgeries either make the stomach volume smaller by creating a new stomach pouch, or cut down the digestion tract by connecting the stomach to the large intestines and completely bypassing the small intestines. The newer Lap-Band surgery makes a smaller stomach and is generally suggested because of the shorter recuperation and smaller risks. The Lap-Band is also favored because it is reversible and flexible. Often patients go through a more even time of weight loss and are able to keep the weight off longer than with other surgical methods. The most widespread weight loss surgery procedure performed these days is the Roux-en Y Gastric Bypass. This procedure decreases the amount of food that passes into the stomach. The small stomach pouch only contain one ounce of fluid. The amount of food that is absorbed into the digestive system will also decrease. The stomach is either stapled or sewn closed at the upper half creating a smaller stomach on top. The intestines are then connected to the smaller stomach and food passes directly from one are to another. The Gastric Bypass surgery has the advantages of a quick weight loss right after surgery. This procedure also has a higher success rate than other forms of weight loss surgery. On the other hand, the Gastric Bypass is often further invasive and the time to recover time is longer. The Vertical Banded Gastroplasty is a comparable surgery, but the stomach is stapled and the intestines are left intact. The most radical of the weight loss surgeries is known as the Biliopancreatic Diversion. In this surgery, about three-fourths of the stomach is entirely removed and the rest of the stomach is linked to the ending segment of the small intestines. There are quite a lot of disadvantages to this method like having a higher mortality rate, the dumping syndrome, life long bone density loss and anemia. The advantages to this weight loss surgery are that it is possible to eat larger meals and it also gives the patients the biggest initial weight loss.
