What is Lap Band Procedure?

The Lap Band Procedure is a weight loss surgery method. Obese people often struggle their whole lives trying to lose weight. Working out and having a low-fat diet is often useless. Some people require more radical options for losing weight. For people trying to lose a substantial amount of weight, the Lap Band is one option. The Lap Band is vastly recommended and is one of the most up-to-date forms of weight loss surgery.

Both surgeons and patients frequently prefer the Lap Band weight loss surgery when treating obesity. The people who are experiencing obesity often have other health problems that can be life threatening. Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart conditions and sleep apnea are all related to obesity. Lap Band Procedure is less invasive the other forms of weight loss surgery. This means that doctors are able to make a smaller cut during the operation. This results in fewer traumas to the body and a faster healing time.

During the Lap Band Procedure the patients are put under anesthesia. A silicone elastomer ring is then positioned laparoscopically and this is considered minimally invasive. The surgeon will begin the surgery by making small incisions, called ports, in the stomach wall for the insertion of the surgical instruments. In the incision a small camera is put to aid the surgeon while the operation is taken place. The band is then wrapped around the upper half of the abdomen and then locked securely in a ring. The band is usually left empty and not filled with saline for the first four to six weeks.

Later the silicone ring is then filled with saline to form a new small stomach. The quantity of food in the stomach is reduced because of the new smaller stomach shaped by the ring. But the patient does not feel hungry for the reason that the stomach is full. When less food is consumed, the body is able to use the fat reserves instead of the excess of food. In this way weight loss is obtained.

There exist quite a lot of benefits of the lap band surgery compared to the other weight loss procedures. Because the surgery is performed laparoscopically, the surgical procedure is less invasive, making the recovery time after the surgery much shorter. With other weight loss operations, the intestines are re-routed and the stomach is either cut or stapled. But that is not the case with the Lap Band Procedure and it is also possible to reverse the operation. This surgery also produces less scares and less hurting than other weight loss surgeries. And the Lap Band does not give any problems with the absorption of vitamins as some of the other weight loss methods can cause.

The Lap Band system is regularly preferred over other procedures because it is adjustable. This allows the doctor to individualize the restriction for best weight loss. The stomach band can simply be adjusted without extra hospital time or additional surgeries. Patients with Lap Band surgery can also become pregnant because it allows the stomach outlet size to adjust to the new nutritional needs. Both patients and doctors often prefer the Lap Band procedure because it is a safer alternative to other weight loss surgeries.
